On November 15, OL chairman John Textor, true to his optimistic nature, was convinced he was going to dazzle the DNCG, where he was eagerly awaited. However, he was soon disillusioned, as French football's financial watchdog failed to see through the promises made months earlier, and hit back hard with a precautionary demotion to Ligue 2, a recruitment ban and a wage bill ban. According to our information, Lyon were €175 million short of what was needed to get over the hurdle. OL, a publicly quoted club, refuses to comment on this large sum.
Even so, John Textor was quick to express his displeasure with the DNCG on RMC on Monday, accusing it of being subservient to the LFP and of lashing out at Lyon. The Conseil national de l'éthique, the body responsible for combating inappropriate behaviour and comments, has finally decided not to refer the matter to the LFP's disciplinary committee following the comments made by Lyon's chairman.
"Mr Textor's statements about the DNCG's alleged attachment to the French League, or about discriminatory treatment of Olympique Lyonnais, show a clear and persistent lack of understanding of the rules governing the financial regulation of professional football in France," replied DNCG chairman Jean-Marc Mickeler curtly yesterday. "We have spent an unprecedented amount of time listening, informing and responding to the club's numerous requests. Our teams took care to explain the laws and regulations, particularly in France, while clarifying the expectations arising from them. We regret that, despite this unprecedented support, Mr Textor persists in trying to make people believe that the DNCG has misunderstood his model and applied unfair treatment to OL". Before warning: "We invite Mr Textor to concentrate his efforts on implementing the measures necessary to re-establish a healthy financial situation."
Significant cash inflows since 15 November
OL is working hard to avoid going under. For the time being, their efforts were not enough to convince the FFF on appeal on Friday, as the sanctions were upheld. But the fight goes on to avoid being relegated to Ligue 2 next season. Since November 15, OL have recorded significant financial income. First, there have been the sales of Maxence Caqueret to Como (€16.5 million), Gift Orban to Hoffenheim (€9 million excluding bonuses) and Jeffinho to Botafogo (€5.3 million). 31 million in new money plus the reduction in the wage bill that goes with it, fuelled by the (free) departure of Anthony Lopes to Nantes, not to mention the expiry of some very big contracts (Lacazette, Tagliafico) at the end of the season.
He is also said to have honoured a large part of the promise to inject €100m before the IPO (Eagle's listing on the American stock exchange): €80m has already been paid. Finally, the imminent sale of the lease on the Meyzieu training centre, in the form of an increased stake in Michele Kang's OL féminin, should add a further 20m.
All in all, then, around 150 million euros have arrived or are about to arrive in the club's accounts, even before the rest of the programme: in an official press release, the investment fund Sportsbank announced last week that it had "reached an agreement with Eagle Football Holdings Limited for an investment in Eagle which will include a period of exclusivity", to the tune of 240 million euros. Alternatively, HD Venture, a group of Saudi investors, would buy John Textor's 45% stake in Crystal Palace for $225m (€218m).
And that's without counting possible cash injections from Botafogo, another club in the Eagle galaxy, which is expected to make big transfers if it sends Luiz Henrique or Igor Jesus to the Premier League. OL hopes this will be enough to meet the DNCG's demands in May.
